I love politics. Well, I really hate politics, but I love learning about politics and feeling like I know who and what I'm voting for. I was having a political discussion between institute classes with some people and one of the girls was completely wide eyed the entire time. She had no idea what we were talking about (Measures 66 and 67) and she thought she understood the basic concept, when in reality she had no clue how the measures would really be played out and the consequences involved. "How do you guys even KNOW about this stuff? What do you even read to find out this, because I read the ballot and it said nothing about that, but it makes sense." We told her you had to do a little research. There is no way to sum up a Measure in one or two paragraphs. I mentioned how I listen to talk radio in the background while doing homework or folding laundry. One of the guys said it's all about seeing the connections, knowing what key words mean a tax increase is involved and so forth, even if the ballot doesn't directly state it. She seemed really concerned that the only way to really be able to understand was to have a knack for politics or go to law school. We tried to assure her it wasn't that time consuming or hard and gave her tips and ways to incorporate learning about politics into her already busy schedule. Personally, I love reading blogs, and with Google Reader its so much easier (thanks Kelly) because they are all in once place instead of going to each blog individually. I looked up Malcolm Gladwell on facebook to see how often the fan page is updated, sometimes they list upcoming events, and found that he has a BLOG! He's a busy guy, and its not updated all that often, but I'll take whatever I can get from this guy.
When I saw your post title, I thought this was going to be about me! But then I got here and it wasn't. So I'm a little disappointed, but I'll get over it. :-)
ReplyDeleteYou are right that it's really not that hard to follow politics - it just takes a little effort to get into the groove and then it takes much less effort to keep updated.
Anyway, tell me what I have to do to beat out Malcolm Gladwell as your "favoritest" person ever, ok?
Well, some time ago on your blog you said your New Years Resolution with Josh was to save billions of dollars. Can you have him run for Governor of California and let me be his wing(wo)man? Although I would have to move to California....... I don't have a problem with that!
ReplyDeletep.s. at least you were mentioned in this post. does that not make you feel special?
