Little Strides

I wouldn't call it  a "battle," but an ongoing discussion Ben and I have had since the beginning of our marriage was about my desire to not feed our family processed food. I would love to see our family eat organic when possible, and locally. While Ben has always been supportive in word, he's not always been supportive in deed. Example: Last week I sent him to the commissary with a list of about 10 items. He returned with 10 bags filled with pudding cups, chips, jell-o boxes, and bags of flour, sugar and coco powder for making cookies. I was SUPER annoyed. That evening I was poking around 100daysofrealfood.com. I had read some articles a few years ago, but wanted to refresh my memory.

Ben found the tabs open on the computer and read them. He suggested we watch Food, INC. together. I forgot I had seen the movie before, but it was so good to watch it again with Ben. And he surprised me at the end when he said, "I think we need to eat less meat." JAW DROP! This is coming from the guy, who in the first year of marriage told me, "I consider meat to always be the main dish for dinner." We've decided that if we eat less meat, we can splurge and get grass-fed, locally raised meats. And I told him I wouldn't nickel and dime us with always buying organic, non-gmo, etc. but that I would do what I could. Possibly sticking to the EWG Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen lists.

Shopping has been such a hassle since we moved here. The produce at the commissary, well, it sucks. Then there's Walmart. But luckily, I was able to find a bus that stops in town twice a week that's a mini farmers market. No one here grows anything besides wheat, so local produce is hard to come by. But this place has really good looking meats. So we'll start there.

What do you do to help your family cut our processed food?
